The month of June is typically the time when major tech giants drop bomb shells, and this year seems no different. As per the announced schedule, the month will be packed with showcases and streams, including the Ubisoft Forward, Xbox Games Showcase, and Summer Game Fest, among others. Recent rumors suggest that Sony will also be joining in on the party.
Rumors have circulated for some time that Sony plans to host a PlayStation Showcase this summer, and with the cancellation of E3, the chances of a PlayStation Showcase have increased even further. The most recent development in this regard is that Jeff Grubb, a reliable industry insider from Giant Bomb, has speculated that the event will take place before the Summer Game Fest.
The Summer Game Fest is scheduled for June 8, and Grubb suggests that PlayStation Showcase will happen sometime before that in June or earlier, possibly in May. He predicted on the GiantBomb podcast that the PlayStation Showcase would most likely take place in May, with the possibility of it being pushed back until very early June. He said
I would probably safely say that’s May at this point, but in general I’m going to continue saying before Summer Game Fest, because that’s just the safest way of doing it, but yes, May, maybe very, very early June; that seems like the right time to get that PlayStation Showcase.
Jeff Grubb
Although nothing has been officially confirmed by Sony, given Grubb’s track record of having the ear of some good sources and being spot on with a number of predictions, PlayStation Showcase is pretty much on the cards.
Personally, I believe that the PlayStation Showcase will happen on May 25. It follows the tradition of PlayStation State of Play events taking place on Thursdays. Furthermore, it would provide Sony with some breathing room from other live events scheduled around the same time. However, since Sony has not confirmed anything, all this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
