Ubisoft games have long required players to have an active Ubisoft account in order to access and play the purchased games. However, the company policy regarding inactive accounts has recently come to light. The recent policy is particularly troubling if you’ve previously made purchases using your Ubisoft account.
The new policy surfaced on the internet earlier this week when a Twitter user shared a screenshot of an email they received from Ubisoft informing them that their account had been suspended temporarily due to inactivity. The inactive accounts are then given a 30-day window to cancel their closure.
However, after this time period, they will lose access to their entire Ubisoft library, including purchased games. Ubisoft Support responded to the tweet by reiterating the 30-day notice period and urging anyone affected to cancel the account closure by clicking the link in the email.
The gaming community is concerned about a recent policy and is of the viewpoint that once you buy a game, you should be able to access it whenever you want, regardless of whether it was purchased digitally or physically. However, digital purchases are frequently referred to as a license to play the game rather than outright ownership, making it easier to restrict access.
The terms of use provided by the company state that an account must be inactive for six months before it is suspended and then notified of its impending closure. Therefore, if you have a Ubisoft account with purchases associated with it, you should log in and reset the inactivity counter to avoid account suspension.
Ubisoft is now facing widespread criticism for its inactive account policy, particularly in light of recent growing concerns of the players. The policy did not sit well with Opera GX, who tweeted about it.
A Twitter user was so frustrated with the policy that he declared it to be illegal.
