A while back, CD Projekt revealed that they were working on an upcoming title, Project Sirius, set in the Witcher universe. The project was announced in October of last year, with the aim to appeal to both veterans and those who had never played the original video game.
It was in development at an indie studio, The Molasses Flood, and was one of the titles that had drawn the developers to jump back into the Witcher world after concluding the adventures of Geralt of Rivia.
The project raised the specter of turning the game into a service, which proved no good for the studio. In fact, everything proved to be a little too ambitious, forcing the team to backtrack and restart.
According to VGC, CD Projekt made an investor announcement yesterday in which the team evaluated that The Witcher: Project Sirius posed a significant economic risk to the studio. Simply put, it costs too much for what its real potential may be.
In the first two months of 2023, figures close to $ 10 million were spent on the project, and if things continued in that direction, at some point, that sum would overwhelm the company’s bottom line. In short, the expenses would not justify the actual progress and scope of the project; the developers have thus announced:
The scope and commercial potential of the original concept of Project Sirius, and ongoing work on formulating a new framework for this project
Developers Announcement
This statement implies a possible restart of the project and a return to the pre-conceptual stage, as the developers are eager to find an idea that will not economically sink the company while concentrating expenses in the best way possible.
