Square Enix has just announced that Triangle Strategy has sold over one million copies worldwide. This figure is based on sales on all platforms and counts physical shipments and digital downloads for the game.
Triangle Strategy is a tactical role-playing game released this year. Square Enix and Artdink jointly develop the game. Initially, this game was only available for Nintendo Switch; however, that all changed when Square Enix announced that the game would be getting a PC port. The company published the PC port and released it worldwide on October 13th, 2022. The game’s development was helped by Tomoya Asano, who worked on other Square Enix RPGs such as Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler.
The game was first announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on February 17th, 2021, titled “Project Triangle Strategy.” Tomoya Asano, the game’s producer, stated that the game would be going in a new direction compared to his past projects, so the decision was made to turn the game into a tactical RPG compared to a JRPG. This change was because the team wanted to tell a more mature and grounded story. During the reveal, the game was shown to have an HD-2D graphics style similar to the company’s Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, which is now available for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
The gameplay was based on other tactical RPGs, as players will take turns moving their party across a grid while defeating enemies using various unique characters. When the game launched, it was met with generally positive reviews from critics, and now it’s gone on to sell around one million copies. While other titles from Square have sold many more copies, it’s fair to say this was a success for the company.
Tomoya Asano’s previous game, Octopath Traveler, has sold over 3 million copies so Triangle Strategy has some work to do to beat Octopath. Still, Square Enix thanks everyone for supporting the game.
