Square Enix announced “SYMBIOGENESIS” earlier today, which is set up to be the company’s first digital collectible art project created with Web3 users in mind. The news was revealed inside the India Game Developers Conference, designed to bring people from all over the world together at an event called the “Web3 Conclave”.
A few weeks ago, people noticed that Square had filed a brand new trademark in Japan for the term “Symbiogenesis.” This immediately led to speculation as to what this new project could be, with the most popular theory being that it was a Parasite Eve revival. This was believed by many people, as the definition of the word trademarked by the company was the basis for the 1995 classic; as such, many people expected an announcement of a remake.
However, fans’ excitement may have been all for naught, as the project has turned out to be a new “collectible art” NFT project and not a Parasite Eve remake. The announcement was made via a 30-second trailer that boasted the words “Untangle The Story.” The trailer also revealed two other things, the first being a logo for the upcoming project, and the next being a release date, which is set to be Springe 2023.
Square Enix markets the project as a brand new entertainment content set in an independent world where various characters live together, a collection of digital art, interactive stories, and an exclusive community. This art can be used for profile pictures on various social media or in an alternate world as a character. Players can uncover the mystery by completing missions around monopolies and distribution issues. The story is promised to be “everchanging” and will evolve with each action the player takes.
The company has been criticized heavily for choosing to make an NFT project, especially on the company’s Twitter account. The project’s success can only be known once it releases in Spring 2023.
