It had been rumored since the beginning of 2023 that a King Kong game was in the works at GameMill Entertainment, but everything else was under wraps. Earlier today, Amazon Spain published listings for Skull Island: Rise of Kong, a Kong game that will be released later this year. It was speculated that this listing was, in fact, for the same game that was in development at GameMill Entertainment. A few hours after the listing, an official announcement trailer confirmed the game.
The title is a thrilling third-person action-adventure game that takes inspiration from the profound lore of Skull Island by creator Joe DeVito and Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong. The announcement trailer gives a sneak peek into what the game brings to the table.
The game will have players take on the role of Kong, the mighty ape, to avenge his parent’s death and reclaim the throne that is rightfully his own. The path to the throne, however, will not be easy; you will have to traverse enigmatic landscapes, battle lethal boss fights, and defeat primal beasts before finally facing the primal terror of the ultimate alpha predator, Gaw.
The gameplay is action-packed, with ferocious attacks, combos, finish attacks, special abilities, and intriguing boss battles. Therefore, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to unleash your rage as Kong and drive even the most formidable foes away with your earth-shattering roar and brutal attacks.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong is set to release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox One Nintendo Switch, and PC later this year. However, no specific release window was announced by the developers. The Amazon listing mentions a December 31, 2024, release date, which could be just a filler and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Furthermore, Skull Island will be available for pre-order at major retailers for £34.99, with a digital deluxe version, the Colossal Edition, priced at £44.99. The Colossal Edition includes eight exclusive film grains that allow you to experience a red-tinted rage mode and the aesthetic of classic King Kong films from the 1930s and 1970s. It also includes a Kong color pack with ten different colors, a boss-rush mode for back-to-back titan battles, and a behind-the-scenes exclusive pack including looks at in-game artwork and the all-original orchestral soundtrack.
