Sony confirmed earlier today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has the best PlayStation Store launch in the franchise’s history; it has received more pre-orders and day-one sales than other entries in the franchise.
While Sony didn’t provide specific sales numbers for the game on their platform, the game probably sold well into the millions despite the various launch issues experienced by players. The game is also selling well on other platforms, as it ranks number one on Xbox’s best-seller list and is currently doing tremendously well on PC, as shown by the Steam charts.
Historically, every single launch for a new Call of Duty title has done insanely well, but it’s still impressive that Modern Warfare 2 can pull this off. The game also achieved this record despite being sold for $70, which seems to have become the norm for video games. At this point, we are still determining how well the game did physically.
Although this isn’t a huge surprise and is expected to be in this day and age as the gaming industry moves towards distributing games digitally more and more with each passing day, this is still very impressive. It also doesn’t help that the Modern Warfare 2 discs contain only 70MB of data, so there’s less incentive to buy it physically.
The game continues the Call of Duty tradition of great launches and is off to a great start. However, one thing different this year is that Modern Warfare 2 isn’t expected to be the best-selling game of 2022, at least in the United States. The title will likely go to From Software’s Elden Ring, released earlier this February, despite the game’s historical records on the PS Store. Still, there’s some time left until the year ends, so maybe the game will manage to pull the record from FromSoft’s feet.
