Studio Santa Monica has announced that God of War Ragnarok, which hit PlayStation consoles last month, will receive a New Game Plus mode this spring. The news was delivered to fans via a tweet posted by the studio today, which says that in Spring 2023, fans can expect the feature to be released for the game.
God of War Ragnarok was a massive success for Sony and its developer Santa Monica Studio. It sold well, surpassing 5.1 million units in its first week of release, making it the fastest-selling first-party release in PlayStation history. It also received a lot of accolades at this year’s The Game Awards. Although some time has passed since the game was launched, many players finished it in their own time.
For a while, if players finished the game and wanted to play it again with all their gear and upgrades, they couldn’t because the game didn’t have a New Game Plus mode at launch. The previous God of War also did not have New Game Plus at launch, only receiving it a few months later. NG+ in the original game lets you start a new game with all your gear, abilities, and weapons intact. It also switched up enemies’ attack patterns and gave players a new resource to collect to create better gear.
While many were hoping that Ragnarok would launch with the New Game Plus mode built-in, its arrival after the game’s release isn’t surprising. As for what else to expect from the update, that remains unknown. Santa Monica Studio says it will have more details as the update gets closer to release.
The studio may have DLC or more content to coincide with the release of a new game mode. This could be possible, as other first-party games from Sony saw many additions when New Game Plus was added, such as Horizon Zero Dawn. In this game, players have found many upgrades and additional weapon and clothing modifications, among other new items.
