CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the upcoming DLC expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty will be a paid adventure. Many fans were hoping the expansion would be free alongside an update, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I, V, do solemnly swear that I shall faithfully serve the New United States of America.

CD Projekt Red has been a busy few days, as they announced the release date for the upcoming Witcher 3 next-gen update. Still, they’ve got another announcement for us as they’ve announced that the upcoming expansion for 2077 will only be accessible to users who have paid for it.

Phantom Liberty will be the first expansion for the game in its current incarnation. It’s been almost two years since the game was released, and most of that time was spent reworking and fixing the open-world RPG aspects due to a disastrous launch. As a result, the game is in much better shape than before, and CDPR is turning its attention to adding more content in the form of expansions.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, which was first announced in April 2022 and later confirmed in September, is being touted as an expansion of the spy thriller that will take place in the all-new Night City district. At the same time, the developers have yet to go into great depth about what we should expect, but the upcoming expansion seems like a worthwhile adventure.

In the past, like for The Witcher 3, CD Projekt released paid and free add-on content. The Hearts of Stone expansion cost $9.99 at release, while the Blood and Wine expansion, which included an all-new map, was $19.99. While the company didn’t confirm exact pricing, it said its expansions are traditionally cheaper than full-price games, suggesting that while development may cost a bit more than expected, it will be more affordable than the $60 base game was sold for at launch.

CDPR has confirmed that Phantom Liberty will be the first and only expansion that will be released for Cyberpunk 2077 and that they’ll be turning their attention to Project Orion, the sequel to 2077 after the DLC is released. They have yet to confirm an exact release date, but we know the expansion will release sometime in 2023 for PC and next-gen consoles.
