DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will join the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play libraries with the launch of Season 3, the studio said in an update video posted on Thursday. While the release date for season 3 has yet to be confirmed, season 2 started in late August and is nearing its end.
DICE has announced that EA is holding several free play periods for the game starting in December. All Battle Pass content can likely be unlocked during the free access period, and all purchases and progress made during the free periods should carry over if players purchase the game outright. After Battlefield 2042’s horrible launch in 2021, there have been reports that EA and DICE are considering making some or all of the games free-for-all. This is happening now to some extent through these free-play periods, but whether or not the game will ever become entirely free to play remains to be seen.
We also got some new info on Season 3, introducing a new specialist character and a new map described as the map DICE always wanted to create, a new battle pass, more portal content, and other events. The company said that Season 3 is only a few weeks away. DICE also stated that it will take place in a location they’ve always wanted to create but have yet to be able to do so in Battlefield’s 20 years of development.
The studio also gave us more info about the future of Battlefield 2042, as Season 3 is set to begin in the coming weeks, so fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out more about what’s in store in the game’s future. In their latest blog post, EA Claims that Season 4 is also in the works and that DICE is already in pre-production on new content to follow in 2023.
Battlefield 2042’s season 3, “Escalation,” will be properly revealed later this month. EA also plans to add a class system in early 2023 with the game’s 3.2 updates, which will combat the negative reception towards the game’s specialists.
